Troy Bowker
Executive Chairman

Troy Bowker established Caniwi Capital in 2008 on his return to New Zealand after 11 years in London and New York. Troy holds the position of Executive Chairman of the Group.  He is also a shareholder and Director of Super Rugby franchise, Hurricanes Investments Ltd.

After graduating from University, Troy spent 4 years with Ernst and Young in Auckland, Sydney and London as an international tax specialist prior to embarking on a career in investment banking. Troy Bowker had a decade in senior investment banking positions in London and New York. Troy held positions with Lehman Brothers, Swiss Re Capital Markets and was most recently Managing Director and UK Head Structured Finance and US Head of Asset Finance for HSBC Bank plc.

Troy holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (honours) and a Masters degree in tax policy and economics (honours) from Auckland University. In addition, he is a New Zealand qualified Chartered Accountant and a registered investment and derivatives adviser with the UK Financial Services Authority.

Simon Treacy
Managing DIrector

Simon Treacy is Managing Director of Caniwi Capital Advisory and a shareholder and director of the Private Equity Fund. Simon returned to New Zealand in 2009 after twenty years working in international banking. During this time Simon held senior roles specialising in large scale financing at investment banks in London and New York. Most recently he was Executive Director in the Loan Capital Markets Group at JP Morgan Chase, where he was for some 12 years. His experience includes working on many of the large highly structured financings in Europe.

Simon originally qualified as a lawyer at Victoria University in Wellington and has been registered with the National Association of Securities Dealers in the US and the Financial Services Authority in the UK.

James Gould
Managing Director

James Gould is Managing Director of Caniwi Capital Advisory. James joined Caniwi Capital in March 2011 following his return to New Zealand after 13 years in London and Sydney.

After graduating from university James worked for law firm Rudd Watts & Stone in Wellington, before moving to London to work for Allen & Overy, a leading European law firm. James joined Lehman Brothers in London in 2001 and worked closely with the firm’s leading private equity and corporate clients to originate and finance M&A activity throughout Europe. His experience includes financing many significant European LBO transactions. James transferred to Lehman’s Sydney office in 2007 as Executive Director, Investment Banking, to establish and lead the firm's Financial Sponsors coverage and Acquisition Finance businesses in the Australasian region.

James holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce from Victoria University (Wellington) and an MBA from INSEAD (France).

Des Gittings
Managing DIrector

Des Gittings is Managing Director of the Private Equity Fund and a shareholder and director of the Private Equity Fund. Des’s background is in accountancy, finance and business management for medium sized businesses across a diverse range of businesses in Europe and New Zealand. Des returned to New Zealand in 2000 after a 5 year period in Europe where he worked in the finance field for a number of businesses. Before joining Caniwi, Des has worked as CFO for a decade for Agersectus Group, one of the fastest growing privately owned wine companies in New Zealand. Des provides extensive experience in business acquisition, SME management, systems implementation, restructuring and new business development.

Des is a New Zealand qualified Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (Accounting and Finance) from the University of Waikato.

Mark Withy
Director - Private Equity

Mark Withy is a director and shareholder of the Private Equity Fund and also assists the Corporate Finance Advisory unit as required. Mark is also Director and Principal of Goldhurst Advisory Services Limited. Goldhurst provides director’s services and financial advisory services to the hedge fund and private equity industries.

Prior to forming Goldhurst, Mark worked at a senior level for more than a decade with Tudor Investment Corporation (Tudor), a leading US hedge fund group. Mark held many senior positions at Tudor including Chief Executive Officer of Tudor Capital UK, Director of Global Operations and Tudor Group Treasurer. He was appointed to the main board of Tudor in 2003 and held the above positions at his retirement from Tudor in 2006 when he returned to New Zealand.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (Honours) in Accounting and Finance from University of Waikato (1988) and in 1991 was admitted as a Chartered Accountant.

Michael Stanley
Director - Property

Michael Stanley is a Director of Caniwi Capital Partners Limited and Advisory Board member to the Corporate Finance Advisory unit. Michael retired as a New Zealand partner of Ernst & Young in 2009 after 30 years with the firm.

Michael’s career with Ernst & Young as a Tax Advisory partner also included spells as Board member & Chairman , National Tax Practice leader, member of Ernst & Young’s Global tax practice committee and a strategic regional management posting for Thailand / Greater China / Far East Area.

Michael has overseas professional work experience in the United Kingdom, Middle East and Far East.

Michael holds a Master of Commerce (Honours) degree in Accounting from Canterbury University. He is a member of NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is also a past Board member and President of the American Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand .
Michael currently holds advisory / board roles with a number of SMEs.

Rob Waddell
Director - Private Equity

Rob Waddell is a Director and shareholder of the Private Equity Fund as well as Chef de Mission for the New Zealand Olympic Team.

Best known for his rowing, Rob has won a multitude of titles throughout his illustrious career, including gold in the single sculls at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.  He is also the first person to receive the Sportsperson of the Year Supreme Halberg Award three years in a row.

Away from rowing, Rob has also been involved at a high level in rugby and with Emirates Team New Zealand, Rob completed a business degree with Honours from Waikato University and is a director of Riverdale Farm, a premier horse agistment facility located in Cambridge, as well as director of Waddell Associates, acting as commercial lead for a number of charities and national sporting organisations.

Andy Burford
Director - Private Equity

Andy Burford is a Director and Shareholder of the Private Equity Fund as well as Managing Director of Subsidiary Investments for Caniwi.

Andy’s background spans a variety of business management/ownership roles across several sectors including forestry and agriculture (Wrightson’s), office products (Boise Cascade NZ) and building materials (PlaceMakers). Andy joined the Caniwi team in 2011 in the role of General Manager in the plastic packaging distributor (Stowers Containment Solutions) which was sold to PACT Australia in 2015. He works fulltime between Petroleum Equipment Services and Caniwi's most  recent acquisition Lancer Aluminium, both based in Auckland.
